so here's my doublecrossing lexitrick--

I have "quarter till" as my underlying form
(as I say "quarter till" when the next hour is known),
but I say it like "quarter t'five" when I have to specify the hour.

Does anyone else do this?

Also, people who say "quarter of" confuse me, because I don't even know what that means. I just included it as a hypothetical option because I've heard Objectionable and Scandalous Rumours of its existence.

P.S. Earl Grey is reasonably hott, as the saying goes. I'm completely just one bald head, a starship, and a matter replicator away from becoming a Picard.

I've never understood "__ of." I always say "__ to"...might be a Canadian thing...

"Quarter of" is "quarter before", as far as I'm aware. I'm pretty sure it's mainly a Philadelphian thing -- or at least that's what I'm told. "Quarter of five" would therefore be 4:45. I've heard it used quite a bit, but it's slightly confusing sometimes even for me.

doesn't the "quarter of" thing stem from Germanix?
I... uh... forgot how to tell time.

Viertel vor [nummer]

vor is more like .. infrontof or before. 'von' is the 'of' or 'from'.

The "of" thing always fucked me up in like first grade math.

My prof. thinks people who pronounce it [kɔɹɾɚ] are weird. :/

I've always known 'quarter of' to mean 'quarter after', and I thought it was British. I've definitely heard it, but it's not natural for me to use, personally.

(Enough contradictions for you?)

I do say 'quarter t'five', but it's short for 'to'. Have almost never heard 'till', as far as I know.

Huh. Maybe I'm wrong, at least if Google has anything to say about it. Interesting.
