I've spent the past one-and-a-half hours trying to work out my graduation requirements. I've been drawing up a spreadsheet that so far has 21 columns and 28 rows [available here for the morbidly curious], but there are so many damn exceptions and qualifiers to the Arts & Sciences rules (not to mention the alterations made by the fact that I'm a Linguistics major) that a spreadsheet really isn't sufficient. mrr.

Some rough conclusions--
  • Good News
    • I'm doing very, very well in fulfilling the course requirements of my major. If I successfully complete my courses this semester and next semester, I'll only need to finish three more courses to fulfill Linguistics requirements.
    • My language requirement for both A&S and Linguistics will be fulfilled by the time I finish Chin 102 next semester.
  • Bad News
    • I need to hit my distribution requirements very hard. I'm behind on filling those.
    • My "number of courses" is below where it should be right now, mostly due to the light semester I took this past Spring.

I think my schedule for next semester will look something [like this]. I'll have a hard time getting from class to class on time, and it'll be a difficult semester in general, but it should work.

If I really can't make it work, I'll probably drop Typology (the blue course) because (a) I'm so far ahead on course requirements, so it's able to be pushed back a semester or two and (b) it would eliminate most of my running-between-classes problem.

ah, sleepiness. and I need to study for syntax.

O_o That looks a lot like my schedule of Fall '05, wherein I was constantly sleep-deprived and mad at the world and asking myself whether I really cared whether or not I failed out of school.

...but, err.

Also, I've heard that Abusch is incomprehensible and insane (whatever happened to Molly?), but there's not much you can do about that, I guess.

Yep. She's both, at least in my experiences. She's my advisor, and let's just say I'm really glad that I get the chance to pick someone else (that is, if I ever declare the major).

We've seen each other twice. Once was at the very beginning of freshman year. Basically, she looked over my intended courses and kept changing them on me. Wouldn't let me take...I don't even remember what it was...because she said I already had a KCM class, etc. etc. (and heaven forbid I waste my time taking more than one of those, right?). The second time was even worse. It was when I was trying to get into sign language at IC this semester (which failed for other reasons). I went and saw her solely to get her to sign the darn form, and what she ended up doing was pulling out my TRANSCRIPT from BOTH of the previous semesters and asking me WHY I GOT EVERY GRADE I DID. Especially the lower ones. I basically had to justify my entire Cornell career for her AND that had nothing to do with why I'd stopped by AND one of the transcript pages she had WASN'T EVEN MINE (which took her a long while to notice, and only then because I repeatedly insisted that I hadn't received a C in 101!). Gah. Not just unhelpful, but downright unpleasant to work with.

That and her accent is pretty tricky to understand, although I try not to get all critical about that, since it probably can't be helped (er, and we're linguistics-people, so to be intolerant of the use of multiple languages wouldn't be terribly advisable).

Anyway, for those reasons, I'm putting off 304. * laughs * I'm going to do 302, 400, and try out Legate's morphology class - 423, I think. (Heck, why not. I like her teaching style enough, and I'm interested, and, y'know, General Linguistics Requirements.)

I'm worried now because I can't tell if you're being too anal or if I'm not being anal enough. heh. I figure I'll just keep taking classes at my current pace and cram shit into my senior semesters as necessary.
