why do I have to pay the postage for my absentee ballot? do people have to pay postage for things like tax filings and suchforth? (I don't know the answer to that.) I know that the cost to me is almost negligible, but ... I feel like maybe the government's own carrier service shouldn't charge for items which are purely government-related? mm. Then again, I guess that absentee ballots (and other government-related-mail-things) aren't too uncommon, so that's more revenue en mass for the USPS, eh? oh, nickel-and-diming.

I've sortof wondered the same thing... I guess some of it is that the state may not really have to require absentee ballots, or something? Or maybe it falls in some loophole that states that the state doesn't actually have to pay for it?

Alternatively, maybe you can ask someone in the Elections Board really nicely and they'll provide stamps for you if you're really short on nickels.

While paying your own postage does feel a bit like a poll tax, which is certainly illegal, the charge doesn't represent an undue grievance for anyone. Think about how funny it would be to panhandle for change to vote. "Need thirty-seven cents for postage to mail in absentee ballot," would be the best sign ever.

Come to think of it, where do homeless folks get the marker and cardboard, anyhow?

Cardboard is no problem (behind any store!) and a good marker is relatively cheap and will last for awhile.

So I looked back two entries and saw something about an extra shift tomorrow. It seems that, after all, you do have time-obligations after class. Ach. :/
